- ➤ After financial struggles forced a local woman to cancel her daughter's Quinceañera, community businesses and a former mariachi teacher surprised teen Lupita with a celebration that included her dream dress—sponsors paid for the venue, makeup, and photography. KSNV
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ A new charter school named WYLEES opened a month ago at Boulevard Mall and held its ribbon cutting on Friday with 210 students learning through project based courses. The school is in a 46,000 square foot former call center that offers a four day school week with plans to add high school—school leaders say it gives students a safe, hands on learning environment. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Nevada Highway Patrol launched a pedestrian safety campaign on September 5 that will run until September 22—aiming to curb roadway deaths after 58 pedestrians lost their lives from January 1 to July 31. The patrol is working with other law enforcement agencies to remind both drivers and pedestrians to stay alert on busy roadways. KSNV
- ➤ The City of Henderson Police Department is running its 12th Joining Forces enforcement initiative—begun on September 5 and continuing through September 22—to improve pedestrian safety at marked crosswalks. The $179,000 grant from the Nevada Department of Public Safety's Office of Traffic Safety will fund measures to enhance roadway safety. KSNV
