CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Retired police captain Joshua Bitsko wrote a book called "The Courage to Live" that tells how he helped during the October shooting and healed after the Route 91 Harvest Festival massacre — the book will be released on October 1. He talked with ARC Las Vegas and Evan Schreiber about the lessons he learned. KSNV
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Officials with CCSD are asking for community input via a survey to decide if school start times should shift 30 minutes later next school year — the survey is open to parents, students and staff until 5 p.m. on October 17. KSNV
- ➤ Psychologist Dr. Tanya Crabb of Soul Works urged local parents to talk with children about gun violence, citing incidents at Roy Martin Middle School and Cimarron High School that raised concerns. She recommended co-regulation techniques—such as asking children about their feelings—to help them separate fact from speculation and ease fears. KSNV
- ➤ The Clark County School District is exploring a plan to delay school start times by 30 minutes next school year—parents, students and staff can complete a quick survey until October 17 to share their views on the change. KSNV
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Federal funding will expire at 12:01 a.m. on Wednesday and thousands of federal workers and contractors in Nevada may face disrupted pay if a shutdown happens. Ongoing talks in Washington could worsen the state’s economy—official sources say the impact may grow if the shutdown continues. KSNV
- ➤ Governor Joe Lombardo appointed Dr. Victor Wakefield as Nevada Superintendent of Public Instruction. Wakefield will start his job on Oct. 27 — he is a seasoned educator set to work with the governor to improve public schools. KSNV
- ➤ The City of Henderson finished rebuilding Eastern Avenue from Horizon Ridge Parkway to Sun City Anthem Drive ahead of schedule, easing resident concerns about road conditions. The project included pavement rehabilitation, ADA ramp upgrades, new pavement striping, upgraded street lighting, and signage improvements + utility relocations and water valve work. KSNV
- ➤ Congresswoman Susie Lee has worked in Washington to secure veteran mental health care with laws like the COMPACT Act that helped 50,000 veterans and saved $64 million—she is now pushing to expand support at Creech and Nellis Air Force Bases. Senator Jacky Rosen and Senator Catherine Cortez Masto have supported new efforts and will continue working to improve care and resources for veterans. KSNV
