CRIME NEWS

  • Devyn Michaels—accused of decapitating her boyfriend two years ago at a Henderson home—withdrew her guilty plea on July 17 and will now go to trial, with Judge Tierra Jones warning that a trial could lead to a harsher first-degree murder charge.  KSNV

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Gas prices in Nevada remain steady as the summer heat intensifies, with the average cost for a gallon of regular gasoline at $3.76—a 24-cent drop from last year *Las Vegas drivers pay $3.73 while Reno drivers are charged $4.05*. A low-pressure system off the Gulf Coast *may affect prices if it disrupts local refineries*.  KSNV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Community leaders in Henderson and across Las Vegas are planning to hire about 75 crossing guards to boost student safety for school starting on August 11 – hiring events are scheduled from July 21 to July 24 at local libraries – applicants must be at least 18 and pass background checks.  8 News Now

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The City of Las Vegas began pedestrian safety upgrades at high-risk intersections, including areas near Arbor View High School and at Nellis and Cedar, Sahara and Redwood, and Rancho and Coran, with the work set to finish by March 2026. The City of Henderson is making similar improvements at Pecos and Millcroft by installing a new crosswalk and a solar-powered flashing beacon to help pedestrians reach Green Valley Park safely.  KSNV
  • Clark County will add more crossing guards at elementary and middle schools as the new school year nears—officials noted that 1,298 guards are now in place in the area and additional safety measures are planned after a recent fatal incident. County Commissioner Michael Naft said the move is part of broader efforts that also include road improvements to protect students.  KSNV

HEALTH NEWS

  • Baby Grecia was born on January 30th at just 22 weeks and weighed one pound; she spent 166 days in the UMC Children's Hospital NICU and was discharged on Tuesday weighing 9 pounds and 10 ounces. The neonatal team praised her recovery as she now breathes and eats on her own.  KSNV
