- ➤ Harry Reid International Airport launched a pilot program to help deaf and hard of hearing travelers by connecting them with ASL interpreters through the Aira ASL app—this free service is now available at the airport, Henderson Executive, and North Las Vegas airports in preparation for the DeafNation World Expo & Conference. - ➤ A judge rescheduled the jury trial for Nathan Chasing Horse—from Aug. 4 to January 12—after defense said the large amount of evidence in his case alleging sexual abuse of three women including two minors required more time to review, and he remains in custody with a $500,000 bond. 8 News Now
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Dr. DeRionne Pollard will step down as president of Nevada State University later this year to become the first female president of the American Association of Community Colleges — her last day on campus is July 31 and her official final day is Sept. 5. Pollard led the Henderson-based school since 2021 and oversaw major changes such as the institution’s renaming and increased student support funding. KSNV
- ➤ Nevada State University President Dr. DeRionne Pollard will step down this fall to lead the American Association of Community Colleges — the first woman to head the 105-year-old group — with her last day on campus set for July 31 and her new role beginning on September 5. She led the school since 2021, increasing enrollment and securing over $25 million in donations while Dr. Amber Lopez Lasater will serve as Officer in Charge. 8 News Now
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Clark County will host in-person hiring events starting July 21 at several library locations in Henderson, Las Vegas, and North Las Vegas to recruit crossing guards for the 2025-2026 school year as students return on Aug. 11. Applicants must be 18 or older, pass a background check, and bring two forms of government-issued ID (including one with a photo). 8 News Now
- ➤ Reggie Rader was sworn in as Henderson’s new police chief on July 15 at City Hall with his family in attendance and strong support from city council and Mayor Michelle Romero. He said he would tackle overtime issues and staffing shortages and make command team decisions based on staff feedback + community input. 8 News Now
