COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ An abandoned lot in Paradise Palms—located at 1694 Pawnee Circle—has become a hotspot for squatters, causing local residents to repeatedly chase them away. Clark County, which owns the property, said it will clean the lot in the coming weeks while neighbors remain concerned about safety and future development. KSNV
ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ Gas prices have dropped to levels last seen in July 2021 as summer road trips heat up. The national average fell to $3.14 before a slight rise to $3.17, and Nevada drivers now pay about $3.76 while Las Vegas and Reno see prices near $3.73 and $4.08 respectively, marking the first time in four years that summer gas prices are this low. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ The Clark County School District is replacing AC units at 37 schools — many with over 30-year-old systems — and will complete the work by July 22 to lessen class disruptions. The district is investing nearly $5.2 million and selected schools based on unit age and performance issues discussed at a May board meeting. 8 News Now
- ➤ UNLV is hosting a college prep workshop from July 10—13 that brings nearly 75 high school students to learn about college applications and financial aid steps. Organized by nonprofit PeerForward, the event is held for the first time at UNLV to help local students in low‐income areas, though only four from Clark County have enrolled so far. 8 News Now
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The UNLV Immigration Clinic says that ICE holds 406 detainees in Southern Nevada, with 76 in Henderson City jail and 330 at Nevada Southern Detention Center, and notes that about 68% of those detained lack criminal convictions plus only 38% are listed by ICE as non-criminal. The managing attorney warned that ICE may soon increase targeted arrests once additional funding is available, and local residents are growing worried about the impact on families. KSNV
